Cutting stainless steel sheet I would prefer to cut the metal by shear. You did not indicate the shape desired. For polygon shapes I'd use a jump shear. For more flowing shapes I'd use a throatless shear like a Beverly (in-line blades) or an old Matshalltown (rotary blades) that I have. Shearing will keep the metal flat and undistorted. The one that came on my saw was flimsy bent sheet metal and only supported stock on one side of the cut. I use a piece of 1/4 x 1 1/2" band iron with a kerf for the blade and a little longer than the stock unit. It makes a huge difference when cutting and provides much better support on either side of the cut.

Update Stainless Sheet Metal Bandsaw Blade Just wanted to provide some feedback and appreciation for the suggestion to use a Lennox Diemaster II bandsaw blade. Installed one earlier this year on the Roll-In saw and it's been working beautifully since. It has easily outlasted previous blades I've used. Sharp scissors will cut thin steel shim stock. Short blades are best. Silversmith shears with curved blades are handy for cutting curved shapes in thin metal. They are sort of miniature tin snips. Super glue is excellent for strong bonding of metal and acetone will release it.

I own two smaller laser cutting machines, one has a 4'x 4' bed and the other is a welder that is a 2' x 2' table. The smaller is also made in a cutting machine version as well.. it's roughly 4' front to back and 6' wide and 6' tall and runs on about 30 amps of 240v single phase AC. The fiber laser is what you generally need for laser cutting metal. Plasma will work fine on this, but when plasma cutting stainless with shop air, you get an oxidized cut zone, which is blackened and slaggy. Not very big, and easy enough to sand off with a decent flap disc on a 4 1/2" grinder, but a bit messy. The pros use nitrogen plasma to cut stainless, or waterjet or laser. According to the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) the global demand for stainless steel products has nearly doubled in the last 20 years and continues to grow 5% each year. Almost 46 million tons of stainless steel was produced worldwide in 2014 – a 70 % increase from 2005 (26 million tons).

Iron is a primary element in steel and does not resist corrosion well. Chromium is added to the iron and carbon mix, protecting the metal from oxidation. For steel to be considered stainless, it must contain 11% of chromium. However, most stainless steels contain more than that. Stainless steels have higher levels of nickel in them than carbon .

Everything about it is wrong. Lack of horsepower, lack of rigidity. The iron in steels is a powerful solvent for carbon (as in diamond). Lapping steel with diamond works only because it does not get hot. Free cutting non-ferrous alloys such as aluminum can be easily cut with a carbide blade circular saw.

Hi folks, I have an application where I need to fabricate a 316 stainless steel box about 2' or 60cm cubed in size out of 5mm(about 1/5") thick stainless steel. It will have a 2.5" or 64mm skirt at 45 degrees round the base to fair out the 90 degree angle where the box sits in a . Cutting stainless steel sheet I would prefer to cut the metal by shear.
